Assessing a Temporary Jobs Program for At-Risk Young Adults in Honduras

In partnership with IPA and the World Bank, researchers conducted a randomized evaluation in Honduras to measure whether a temporary jobs program for at-risk young adults improved employment and reduced incidences of violence.

Improving Mangrove Conservation Awareness Through Youth Sports in the Dominican Republic

In partnership with IPA, Grupo Jaragua, and Seacology, researchers conducted a randomized evaluation to assess whether integrating mangrove conservation workshops for youth sports clubs could enhance ecological awareness and promote conservation behaviors. The workshops changed youth knowledge and attitudes about mangroves and also influenced their friends and parents to support mangrove conservation. However, the workshop had limited impacts on changing day-to-day environmental behaviors or interest in buying conservation-friendly products.

The Impacts of SMS Messages and Parental Networks on Early Childhood Development During COVID-19 in Costa Rica

COVID-19 forced students across the world to move from in-person to remote schooling, presenting particularly acute challenges for children in low- and middle-income countries living in households with limited resources and internet access. Researchers worked with IPA, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and Costa Rica’s Ministry of Public Education to develop and evaluate a text message campaign for parents designed to support learning for preschool-aged students during the shift to remote instruction. After 15 weeks, children in households who received the campaign performed better on cognitive assessments, an effect driven by increased parental involvement in children’s education.

Policy Impact

Boosting Math Skills

IPA and the IDB evaluated Panama's JADENKÄ math program for preschool students in the Ngäbe-Buglé region. Incorporating local cultural math concepts, it significantly improved math and ethnomathematical skills, especially for indigenous students. It is now expanding to more Panamanian schools.

COVID and Education

IPA and the IDB surveyed 62,837 caregivers in Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Peru on distance education strategies and resources during COVID-19 and the pandemic’s impacts on learning at home and mental health. Findings influenced government policies to prioritize socioemotional health in education, addressing inequalities among children and caregivers.

Preventing School Dropout

IPA evaluated GUARDIAN, a school mentorship program easing Guatemala's primary-to-secondary transition, across 231 schools in Quiché. The program cut dropout ~5 percentage points at ~USD 122 per student. IPA is now working with the Ministry of Education to design a government-owned model for national scaling.
