This page lists research projects that are being developed by IPA and others. Our goal is to document active studies taking place on COVID-19’s socio-economic impacts—and results, as they come in—in order to inform researchers and decision-makers working to mitigate the crisis. As this is a public good, the hub contains both IPA and non-IPA studies. Inclusion criteria for the hub can be found here, and new projects and questionnaires can be submitted here.

Contagion and Migration in South Asia

<p>The lockdown in South Asia has led to mass migration of people back to their home towns/villages as the work opportunities in urban centres shrink or are no longer available.This poses a public health risk to rural areas as migrants may spread the virus when they return and these areas are ill-prepared to handle the crisis due to poor healthcare infrastructure.Preliminary analysis by Shonchoy (2020) has shown that this is indeed likely since the outbreaks outside of Dhaka have been strongly correlated with migration patterns, potentially due to returning migrants bringing the disease from Dhaka, Chittagong or internationally.</p>

Rapid Feedback for the Government of India on COVID-19 Knowledge, Behavior Change, and Economic Effects

<p>India is vulnerable to both the health and economic impacts of COVID-19.To contain the spread of COVID-19, Prime Minister Modi announced a nationwide lockdown on March 24.To help alleviate hardships to the poor, the central government also announced a US$23 billion relief package and various state governments have announced relief measures.There is an urgent need to monitor the implementation of these programs at a large-scale to ensure rapid course-corrections, ground-level feedback, and targeted resource allocation to geographies and populations that are most in need.</p>

Is Heading Home a Dead End? COVID-Induced Migration and Local Labor Market Opportunities in Rural India

<p>COVID-19-induced migration presents multiple challenges, both direct and indirect, to labor markets.For urban migrants who lose their jobs, alternatives are scarce: since many cannot survive without daily wages, they must journey back to their home villages, where employment options are already in short supply.Once home, migrants face social stigma and limited labor market opportunities.Since internal migration is often geographically concentrated, mass returns also impose large local labor market shocks on sending villages.</p>
