Fernando Fernandez

Fernando is a Senior Research Scientist at the Wyss Academy for Nature at the University of Bern, where he works with an interdisciplinary research team on projects focused on accelerating the transition toward a new model of artisanal gold mining in the Peruvian Amazon.
Previously, he served as chair of the Economics Department at Universidad de Piura and director of the Lima School of Economics. Earlier in his career, he was a research fellow at the London School of Economics (STICERD), where he studied anti-poverty programs designed to empower adolescent girls in Africa. He has also worked as a consultant for international organizations, including the Inter-American Development Bank and the World Bank.
He holds a PhD in Economics from Universitat Pompeu Fabra (2019), a master’s degree in Economics from Barcelona School of Economics (2013), and a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Universidad de Piura (2010).
