On January 10, 2022, the 2021 Zambia Education Evidence Summit brought together policymakers, researchers, and practitioners to a) share rigorous evidence that has been collected about innovative approaches to improve learning outcomes, in Zambia and internationally; and b) identify ways in which evidence can be used for better decision-making. This Evidence Day, Day 1 of the Zambia Ministry of Education's Joint Sector Review (JSR) focused on rigorous studies that connect with the ministry’s priority goals. Under the theme, "Teaching and Learning Continuity during the COVID-19 Pandemic and Beyond" the Summit also identified priority areas of the ministry on which researchers can present findings at the next Evidence Day in 2022. This event focused on the broad partnerships and collaborations that are happening among educators, communities, and government that are leading to more research and evidence-based decision-making across the sector.

Summit Structure and Goals

The Summit included plenary and panel presentations and breakaway sessions to share knowledge on existing evidence, develop skills for identifying quality research, promote evidence-based policy decisions, and develop a research agenda for the education system in Zambia.     

The specific goals of the summit are to:

• Share results of high-quality research on what works in education from researchers and academics doing work in Zambia and internationally
• Develop knowledge of evaluation methods and an understanding of when and how to apply them  
• Engage and inform stakeholders of emerging practices and innovations to improve the delivery of quality education
• Make recommendations on best practices to be adopted by the Ministry
