Seth Garz is Deputy Director of the Lives & Livelihoods team and Lead Development Economist in the Gender Equality Division at the Gates Foundation. His research interests include evaluating the health effects of economic interventions, interdisciplinary approaches to improving health outcomes for women and children, and interventions that support adolescent girls' education and transition to productive livelihoods. Previously, he served as Interim Deputy Director of Data & Evidence for the Women's Economic Empowerment (WEE) team, where he led a research portfolio focused on women's income generation and access to capital and markets.
Earlier, Seth was a Senior Program Officer for the Inclusive Financial Services (IFS) strategy, where he managed a research portfolio focused on digital payments, open finance, privacy-enhancing technologies, and financial consumer protection. He was also a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA), where he led a randomized controlled trial on conditional cash transfers in the Dominican Republic. He holds a PhD in Agricultural and Resource Economics and Policy and a master's degree in Public Policy from the University of California, Berkeley, and a BA in Political Science from Washington University in St. Louis.
