Pia Raffler is a Scientific Advisor for IPA's Uganda office. She is an Assistant Professor of Government at Harvard University, working at the intersection of political economy of development and comparative politics. Pia is interested in political accountability, in particular in sub-Saharan Africa, and more recently in Germany. Her research focuses on the political oversight of bureaucrats and implications for public service provision on the one hand, and electoral behavior on the other. It has won the Best Fieldwork Award, Best Dissertation Award in Experimental Research, and Best Experimental Paper Award from the American Political Science Association. She uses experimental, quasi-experimental, and qualitative methods to measure causal effects and disentangle the underlying mechanisms. Pia's work has been published or is forthcoming in the American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science, the Journal of Politics, Science Advances, and the Journal of Development Economics. She holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from Yale University and has spent a year as a fellow at Princeton University’s Niehaus Center and the Center for the Study of Democratic Politics.
