Michael Greenstone is the Milton Friedman Distinguished Service Professor in Economics at the University of Chicago, where he also serves as founding director of the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Growth and director of the Energy Policy Institute. He previously directed the Becker Friedman Institute for Economics. During the Obama administration, he served as chief economist at the President’s Council of Economic Advisers, where he co-led the development of the U.S. government’s social cost of carbon. His research focuses on energy, air pollution, and climate change, including the effects of environmental policies and the use of data and machine learning to inform environmental inspections. He is also a co-director of the Climate Impact Lab. He holds a PhD in Economics from Princeton University and a BA in Economics from Swarthmore College.
