Bio Info

Lucy Martin is an Assistant Professor of Political Science and Global Studies at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. She has a Ph.D. in Political Science and an M.A. in Economics from Yale University. Her research interests include comparative politics, the political economy of development, African politics, experimental methods, and formal theory. Her current project examines the relationship between taxation and political accountability in sub-Saharan Africa. In recent work she provides new evidence that taxation has a behavioral effect on citizen preferences, decreasing toleration of corruption and increasing the demand for accountability. The theory is formalized and then tested using a set of novel laboratory experiments in Uganda. Other ongoing work uses this finding to explain recent patterns of taxation in Uganda and other African countries, providing an explanation for when governments will choose to tax their citizens, and when they will seek quasi-voluntary compliance rather than taxing coercively. Her work has been covered in The Economist.
