Günther Fink is a health economist and the Eckenstein-Geigy Professor of Epidemiology and Household Economics at the University of Basel, where he holds a joint appointment in the Faculty of Business and Economics and the Faculty of Science. He also heads the Health and Development Economics Research Group at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH), a position he has held since joining the institute in 2017 after 11 years on the faculty of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He holds an M.A. in Applied Economics from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. in Economics from Bocconi University in Milan. He was promoted to full professor at the University of Basel in 2024 after initially joining as an associate professor.

His research focuses on developing and evaluating approaches to improving health and development in low-resource settings and on measuring the long-term economic benefits of health interventions, with a particular focus on early childhood development. He leads longitudinal cohort studies in Brazil, Côte d'Ivoire, Laos, Peru, Tanzania, and Zambia and collaborates with partners internationally on intervention trials.
