Pratham is a large Indian organization dedicated to improving the quality of elementary education in India. Established in Mumbai in 1994 with support from UNICEF, Pratham has since expanded to urban and rural areas in 13 Indian states, and reaches about 200,000 children a year. Pratham programs now include Read India, a program that uses local volunteers to give basic reading instruction to children in the community and helps communities build a supply of books for circulation among children.
