Measuring SES is essential for understanding its role in policy: examining the effectiveness of SES interventions and the relationship between SES and outcomes such as education, loan repayment, health, intrahousehold dynamics, labor, and wellbeing.
The Effective Socio-emotional Skills To Gain Economic Empowerment (ESTEEM) tool was developed through a literature review of existing measures, consultations with psychologists, cognitive interviews, and iterative psychometric analysis across several countries in sub-Saharan Africa. For each of 15 skills in the framework, the tool includes a self-report scale and one or more behavior measures. These tools were used in household surveys by enumerators, but can be adapted for other purposes. Please reach out to Clara Delavallade (World Bank) or Smita Das (IPA) for any questions.
