Abstract

The COVID-19 crisis may impact wholesale and retail businesses in Nigeria and other developing countries in myriad ways. While lockdown measures are in place, many are disallowed from operating their shops. Even after strict lockdowns are lifted, however, they may continue to be affected through disruptions of the supply chain both upstream and downstream. In this project, we conduct high frequency phone surveys with an existing panel of 1,200 traders in markets in Lagos, and seek to understand traders' beliefs about COVID-19 and how they are coping with the pandemic and associated market disruptions in real time.
