On October 29th, Zahra Niazi and Pooja Wagh from IPA’s Financial Inclusion Program hosted a workshop on using randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to improve financial product design at the 2015 Asia Pacific Financial Inclusion Summit. The workshop provided attendees with real-world examples of how RCTs can produce rigorous evidence to improve financial product design.

Pascaline Dupas (Stanford; Co-Chair, J-PAL’s Health Sector, CEGA and IPA affiliate) and IPA, in collaboration with the World Bank and Ghana’s Ministry of Education (MoE), presented preliminary results from the Ghana Secondary Education Program. This ongoing study is investigating the impact of secondary school scholarships on enrollment and completion, as well as later life outcomes.

Innovations for Poverty Action Zambia (IPA) partnered with the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab for Africa (J-PAL) and the University of Zambia (UNZA) to hold a four day impact evaluation course from 24-27 August 2015. The course included two streams: a policymaker stream and a researcher stream. The researcher stream focused on the benefits and methods of randomisation, choosing an appropriate sample size, and common threats and pitfalls to the validity of experiments.

On Thursday July 30, CESED at Los Andes University, IPA Colombia and J-PAL LAC, will co-organize the conference “Public Policy in Post-Conflict: In the search for effective solutions” in Bogotá, Colombia. The event will gather policymakers, researchers and civil society to discuss proven interventions in contexts of conflict and post-conflict and how lessons from these experiences can be incorporated into policy.
