From July 10-12, Research Associate Benny Kabwela participated in a Food Security Programme (FSP) field day held in Mongu, Zambia to launch the distribution of farming inputs under the Wetlands sub-programme. IPA Zambia has been providing long-term support to FSP through the Impact Fund for the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services (MCDSS) to use scientific approaches in targeting vulnerable but viable communities to receive social protection programs. Since May 2021, IPA Zambia and Rutgers University have partnered with the MCDSS to provide technical support to enhance the efficient targeting of vulnerable communities to receive social protection programs, particularly food security packs. IPA Zambia is currently working on developing artificial intelligence (AI)-Informed vulnerability index model to target FSP in Zambia. In developing the model, IPA is connecting micro-level data with high-resolution satellite imagery and social media data to map the landscape of vulnerable communities. The aim is to disaggregate the intensity level of the social security contribution to help the MCDSS target aid more efficiently and effectively. As part of the project, IPA will be developing a user-friendly dashboard that will allow quick data access and visualization. IPA will also provide capacity-building training in the areas of monitoring and evaluation, research, and data analysis and management.
