It is with great sadness that I write as IPA mourns those our community lost, along with the many others, in the Nairobi Westgate attack. We are all shocked by this tragic event.

Ravi Ramrattan, who had been a Project Associate for IPA Kenya and more recently was working in Nairobi for Financial Sector Deepening, was killed in the attack. Ravi remained an integral part of the IPA Kenya community over the last few years. You can read about his passion for helping others and more memories in this tribute.

Elif Yavuz was also among the victims in Nairobi, together with her partner, Ross Langdon. They had travelled to Nairobi to deliver their first child, due in two weeks. Elif had worked as a project coordinator and principal investigator on one of our anti-malaria projects in Uganda and was working in Tanzania with the Clinton Foundation. More about her and Ross’ lives, which were devoted to making the world a better place, can be found here.

Both Ravi and Elif were treasured members of the IPA community, whose warmth, kindness, intelligence and humor continue to be a source of inspiration to us. They will be missed deeply.

Several more IPA staff members count loved ones among those lost in this tragedy, and IPA is mourning all of them. We are holding IPA Kenya staff, all of the victims, and family members who lost loved ones in our thoughts and prayers.
