This summer IPA held two events at Kenyan Universities as part of our goal to get research into the hands of people who can use it. Maseno University and Swarthmore University kindly hosted, giving our staff and research affiliates the opportunity to talk about their work along with government officials, bank and microfinance staff, mobile technology firms, students, and professors. 

 

“Real World Impact of Applied Research: A Focus on New Approaches in Health Policy”, Maseno University

 

The Deputy Vice Chancellor of Maseno University, Prof. Mary Walingo, and IPA Country Director Colin Christensen made opening remarks followed by keynote talks from IPA-affiliated researchers Prof. Michael Kremer (Harvard University) and Prof. Isaac Mbiti (Southern Methodist University).

The day was then structured around 2 panel discussions covering two of IPA's key research and scale-up initiatives: Deworming and Chlorine Dispensers.
 
The panels discussed the relationship between education and health, existing and ongoing research on efficacy of deworming and chlorine, and discussions of how the research is being transformed into action in Kenya, to the benefit of millions of people.

"Banking and the Poor", Strathmore University, Nairobi. 

The second seminar, "Banking and the Poor," was attended by a mix of microfinance institutions, banks,  mobile technology firms and professors and students from Swarthmore, providing interesting, practical feedback and local perspective.

Pascaline Dupas and Jonathan Robinson presented their paper “Challenges in Banking the Rural Poor,” and Philip Machoka presented his paper on mobile money, the slides of which you can download here (The Mobile Money Ecosystem in Kenya).
