On healthcare and luck
Many people who are dissatisfied with formal healthcare in the US and want more personalisation and attention, turn to a source of alternative medicine such as homeopathy.
Similarly in developing countries, people visit traditional doctors because they are accessible, and might be able to treat ailments not covered by the local clinic, such as "bewitched people", "to be liked at work", or "bad luck".
Which reminds me of a hysterical story I just heard of a scary hiring process. The person had a big pile of applications, and threw half arbitrarily in the garbage, saying "I don't want to hire people with bad luck."
I hereby promise that although at IPA we certainly do believe in random processes, we do not do that....
