This page lists research projects that are being developed by IPA and others. Our goal is to document active studies taking place on COVID-19’s socio-economic impacts—and results, as they come in—in order to inform researchers and decision-makers working to mitigate the crisis. As this is a public good, the hub contains both IPA and non-IPA studies. Inclusion criteria for the hub can be found here, and new projects and questionnaires can be submitted here.

Cash Transfers During a Pandemic: Evidence from a Kenyan Slum

<p>This study will deliver cash grants to female microenterprise owners in Dandora, Kenya during the COVID-19 outbreak.Researchers are conducting a randomized controlled trial to study the impact of unconditional cash transfers on economic outcomes both during and after the crisis.The research team&nbsp;will collect information about expectations, beliefs, and impact of any potential government policy responses on business outcomes.This panel data is collected by phone interview on an ongoing basis from early April until the end of August.The study population is composed of entrepreneurs in a dense slum in Nairobi, Kenya called Dandora.</p>

Resilience & Risk in the Informal Sector: Responses to Economic & Security Risks of COVID-19 in Lagos, Nigeria

<p>Researchers are conducting a series of phone surveys to study the economic, social and security impacts of COVID-19 among informal sector vendors in Lagos, Africa’s largest city (with a population of more than 24 million).The survey capitalizes on prior work with a representative sample of market vendors, making rapid data collection at a distance feasible among this otherwise hard-to-reach population.Their experiences are indicative of those of a large and particularly vulnerable subset of the population in Africa–actors in the urban informal economy–who live day to day and whose economic activities will be deeply impacted by the crisis.</p>

COVID-19 Spread in Informal Settlements: Daily Challenges and Fake News

<p>One of the most, if not the most, at-risk groups of COVID-19 is the urban poor, living in overcrowded conditions with very limited access to public (health) infrastructure.This project has two main objectives.The first objective is to generate data on how slum dwellers are coping with policy responses to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 on three areas.First, on hygiene practices, by showing to what extent this highly vulnerable group is following government advice and how this is a function of the constraints they face.</p>
